Short answer: no.
After a crash, your adjuster may recommend a shop from their network. That is a suggestion, not a rule.
What Texas law says
Texas Insurance Code §1952.301 says an insurer can’t require you to have your car repaired at a particular shop.
You pick the shop. Your insurance company still reviews the estimate and pays for covered damage.
Why insurance companies recommend shops
Many insurers have network shops, often called a direct repair program. Those shops agree to the insurer’s pricing and process.
That can make a claim move faster. It also means the shop works regularly for the company paying the bill.
How to use the shop you choose
- Tell your adjuster the name and address of your shop.
- Give the shop your claim number and adjuster’s contact information.
- Let the shop and the adjuster agree on the repair estimate.
- Ask the shop to tell you if they find hidden damage.
Questions to ask any body shop
- Will I get the estimate in writing?
- What happens if you find more damage once the car is apart?
- Which parts will you use, and what does my policy cover?
- How will you keep me updated?
