The minutes after a crash are confusing. Save this list on your phone before you need it.
At the scene
- Check for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call 911.
- If no one is hurt and the cars can be driven, move them out of traffic lanes.
- Turn on your hazard lights.
- Call the police and ask for the report number.
- Exchange names, phone numbers, insurance companies and policy numbers.
- Write down the other car’s plate, make, model and color.
Take photos
- Every car involved, from close and from far away
- The license plates
- The other driver’s insurance card
- Road signs, skid marks and the intersection
Stick to facts at the scene. Don’t argue about fault.
The same day
- Report the crash to your insurance company and write down the claim number.
- If the other driver caused it, you can also open a claim with their insurance company.
- See a doctor if anything hurts, even hours later.
Texas crash reports can be bought online through TxDOT’s Crash Report Online Purchase System once they are filed.
Getting the car fixed
- You choose the repair shop, not the insurance company.
- Send photos to the shop for a first look.
- Ask for the estimate in writing.
- Keep receipts for towing and rental cars.
