Not every dent is worth a claim. Three numbers make the decision easier.
The three numbers
- The repair price, in writing
- Your deductible, listed on your policy
- How a claim could change your premium; your agent can tell you
A simple way to decide
If the repair costs less than your deductible, the insurance pays nothing. Pay yourself.
If the repair costs a little more than your deductible, the claim only pays the difference. A higher premium later can cost more than that.
Example, for illustration only: with a $1,000 deductible and a $1,300 repair, the insurance pays $300.
When a claim makes sense
- Another driver caused the damage, so their insurance is responsible.
- The damage is large or goes past the bumper cover.
- Hidden damage is likely, like after a hard hit.
When paying yourself makes sense
- The damage is cosmetic: a dent, scratch or scuff.
- The price is close to your deductible.
